What Are Sealants?
In order to prevent cavities, here at the Seattle dentist’s office, we apply a thin plastic film on the outer surfaces of molars. And it’s called a sealant. It’s highly effective in preventing cavities.
How Long Will Sealants Last?
A sealant usually last for somewhere between 5 and 10 years. Our dentist can check your sealants during your regular dental checkups, and if it’s not in place correctly, they can be reapplied.
Why Are Sealants Needed?
Back teeth have deep grooves and pits that are very difficult to keep clean. Plaque, which is a nearly invisible film of bacteria and food, collects in these groves. To make the plaque easier to see, we may stain the plaque with a harmless red dye.
Every time you eat, the bacteria in plaque forms acid. Without sealants, these acid attacks can cause the enamel to break down, and you get a cavity.
How Are Sealants Placed?
Sealants normally do not require local anesthesia. Once your teeth are cleaned and dry, we apply a conditioning solution. And the sealant materials will be brushed into the grooves.
