Dental crowns are a common dental treatment that many people may need at some point in their lives. They are often used to restore teeth that have been damaged due to decay or injury or to strengthen teeth that are weakened due to age or wear and tear. Here’s what you need to know about dental crowns:
Dental crowns are custom-made caps that fit over a tooth to restore its shape, size, and strength. They are typically made of porcelain or ceramic, but can also be made of metal or a combination of materials. Crowns can be used to cover a damaged or decayed tooth, protect a weak tooth from further damage, restore a broken or worn tooth, or improve the appearance of a discolored or misshapen tooth.
To place a dental crown, your dentist will first prepare the tooth by removing any decay or damage and shaping it to fit the crown. An impression of the tooth will then be made, which will be used to create the custom crown. While the permanent crown is being made, a temporary crown may be placed to protect the tooth.
Once the permanent crown is ready, it will be bonded to the tooth using dental cement. Your dentist will ensure that the crown fits comfortably and looks natural before securing it in place.
Dental crowns offer several benefits, including:
To care for your dental crowns, it’s important to maintain good oral hygiene habits, including brushing twice a day and flossing daily. You should also visit your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings. Avoid chewing on hard or sticky foods, as this can damage the crown or cause it to come loose.
If you experience any pain, sensitivity, or discomfort with your dental crown, contact your dentist right away.
In summary, dental crowns are a versatile and effective dental treatment that can restore the health, function, and appearance of your teeth. If you think you may need a dental crown, talk to your dentist to learn more about the treatment and whether it’s right for you.
