At A Dental & Denture in Seattle, WA, Miss Angelica Summer understands that adjusting to life with dentures can bring many questions. Proper care is the key to keeping your dentures clean, comfortable, and long-lasting.
Below, we’ve answered some of the most common questions patients ask about daily denture care:
Dentures should be cleaned after meals and thoroughly brushed at a minimum of once a day. Rinsing after eating removes food particles and helps prevent plaque buildup. For brushing, make sure you pick a soft denture brush with a cleanser that is non-abrasive in nature and which is specifically recommended for denture cleaning. Regular toothpaste is too harsh and can scratch the material. A consistent cleaning routine helps maintain both your dentures and your oral health.
Yes. Soaking dentures overnight is one of the most important habits you can adopt. Dentures need to stay moist to retain their shape and avoid becoming brittle. By soaking them in water or a denture solution before bed, you not only protect their fit but also kill bacteria. Plus, taking them out gives your gums and tissues time to rest, reducing irritation and promoting oral health.
Absolutely! Even if you no longer have natural teeth, caring for your gums, tongue, and palate is essential. Gently brushing with a soft toothbrush each night removes bacteria, stimulates circulation, and lowers your risk of infections or sores. Healthy gums provide a better foundation for your dentures and helping them feel more comfortable for daily wear.
Dentures are durable, but they can break if dropped. A simple precaution is to clean them over a folded towel or a sink filled with water; this cushions the impact if they slip out of your hands. Handling them carefully each day can help extend their lifespan and save you from unexpected repairs or replacements.
Consistency is key. Developing a daily routine of rinsing, brushing, soaking, and gum care ensures your dentures stay clean and comfortable. Pair this with regular checkups at A Dental & Denture so that any adjustments, relines, or concerns are addressed early. With these habits, you’ll enjoy a healthier mouth and a more confident smile.
